Oil Palm: Management for large and sustainable yields edited by T. Fairhurst and R. Haerdter, 382 pages.
The Potash & Phosphate Institute/Potash & Phosphate Institute of Canada and The International Potash Institute are pleased to announce the publication of this book on oil palm.
Oil palms are one of the most important and effective sources of vegetable oil. Although globally occupying only 8% of the total area planted with oil crops, oil palms produce about one third of the total production of vegetable oil. Due to its potentially large yields, the land required to produce one tonne of oil from oil palm is considerably less than from annual oil crops provided crop management and fertilization are appropriate to the needs of the crop.
In 15 chapters, this book covers all aspects for the successful management of oil palm ranging from botany and genetics, to land selection and agronomic practices, to nutrition and fertilizer requirements to optimize yield and financial returns. The conduct of fertilizer experiments, the use of residues and the possible application of the concepts of precision agriculture are also covered together with an appendix on methods of measurements, samplings and analysis. Written by scientists and experts acknowledged for their expertise, Oil Palm is a very rich source of information and advice for students, researchers, extensionists and farm managers.
