Soil correction and fertilization in the no-till systems in Brazilian Cerrados region

Soil correction and fertilization in the no-till systems in Brazilian Cerrados region: IPI sponsored the 'Documentos 46' published by the Brazilian National Soils Research Center of EMBRAPA (Brazilian Corporation for Agricultural Research). The document contains an overview of 25 years of practicing No-Till in Brazilian Cerrados (savanna) region, and describes the main features and advantages of the No-Till cultivation system. Recommendations for soil liming, application of gypsum and fertilization with macro and micro nutrients are given.
The term "...Improving fertilizing..." is used when describing the first fertilization cycle given after conversion to arable land, in soils of the Cerrados with K <50 ppm and clay content >200 g/kg. It is recommended to apply 60 kg/ha of K2O for achieving yields of 3 and 6 t/ha of soybeans and maize, respectively. More results from the IPI/EMBRAPA field experiments in Goias state indicate that response of the Cerrado soils to potash fertilizing depends also on other external factors such as weather conditions, previous land use and the application method of potash.
For more details please contact Dr. A. Naumov, IPI Coordinator Latin America (alnaumov@geogr.msu.ru).

Fertilization of cotton in No-Till systems

Fertilization of cotton in No-Till systems: IPI sponsored the Tecnico 24 leaflet published by the Brazilian National Soils Research Center of EMBRAPA (Brazilian Corporation for Agricultural Research). The leaflet describes recommendations based on results of field experiments conducted during 2001-2004, in Goias State, under the framework of IPI/EMBRAPA joint program.
Goias state, in the middle of the Cerrado (savanna) area, occupies approximately 50 percent of Brazil's cotton production. The Tecnico 24 leaflet describes Cotton No-Till practices in Brazilian Cerrado (savannas), different options for cover crops, soil correction and fertilizing practices for cotton planting.
Some of the findings include the recommendation to apply 140 kg K2O /ha before millet cover crop, which in turn increases both DM of millet and cotton yield.
For more details please contact Dr. A. Naumov, IPI Coordinator Latin America (alnaumov@geogr.msu.ru).

Balanced fertilization for different crops in Vietnam - From theory to practice, by Authors: Nguyen Van Bo et al., 2003, Hanoi
The booklet (104 p.) describes in detail the role of plant nutrition for crop production in Vietnam. It highlights the importance of the various nutrients and their cycles in agricultural systems. A special chapter is dedicated to research done under the BALCROP project (co-funded by NISF, IFA, IPI and PPI/PPIC).

Foodstuff production on farmstead contaminated by radionuclides. Recommendations

Foodstuff production on farmstead contaminated by radionuclides. Recommendations, by Dr. I. Bogdevitch, BRISSA Minsk, Belarus, 27 pages.
The brochure is intended for the rural inhabitants having personal plots and farmstead on the territory contaminated with radionuclides after Chernobyl accident. In the brochure we described in simple way the balanced fertilization of different varieties of potatoes and vegetables as well as perennial grasses on meadows and pastures for increasing the yield and for reduction of radionuclide concentration in foodstuff (potato, vegetables, milk and meat) produced on personal plots. It is well known that K-fertilizer has a leading role in inhibitory effect of fertilizers on radionuclides (137Cs and 90Sr) consumption by agricultural plants. Presently up to 50% of total foodstuff in Belarus is produced on personal plots and it is consumed on 90% by rural inhabitants. Mostly large cooperative farms and processing enterprises of public sector supply foodstuff for urban consumers.
